House vocabulary
This list gathers basic to intermediate Chinese vocabulary about the home: rooms, furniture, appliances and terms useful for renting or buying. It's designed for students who want to describe their living space, understand listings, and communicate with neighbors or landlords. Practice with example sentences to lock in each word.
- 家 jiā — home; family; household
- 房子 fángzi — house; building (single- or two-story); apartment; room
- 房间 fángjiān — room (in a building); chamber; space within a house or other structure
- 客厅 kètīng — living room; sitting room
- 卧室 wòshì — bedroom
- 厨房 chúfáng — kitchen
- 厕所 cèsuǒ — toilet; lavatory; restroom
- 浴室 yùshì — bathroom; room in a home with a toilet and (usually) a bathtub or shower
- 阳台 yángtái — balcony; porch
- 花园 huāyuán — garden (for flowers, ornamental plants etc); landscaped park; yard with decorative plants
- 楼 lóu — building with more than one storey; floor; storied building
- 楼梯 lóutī — stair; staircase
- 电梯 diàntī — elevator; (also escalator); mechanical lift for transporting people or goods between floors
- 窗户 chuānghu — window (opening in a wall for light or air); CL: 個|个[ge4], 扇[shan4]
- 门 mén — gate; door; gateway; doorway; opening
- 屋顶 wūdǐng — roof; the top covering of a building
- 地板 dìbǎn — floor (surface you walk on inside a room)
- 墙 qiáng — wall (CL: 面, 堵); a vertical structure that divides or encloses
- 天花板 tiānhuābǎn — ceiling (of a room)
- 家具 jiājù — furniture
- 沙发 shāfā — sofa; couch (loanword)
- 桌子 zhuōzi — table; desk
- 椅子 yǐzi — chair (a seat for one person)
- 床 chuáng — bed; couch (furniture for lying down)
- 衣柜 yīguì — wardrobe; armoire
- 书柜 shūguì — bookcase; bookshelf (a cabinet for storing books)
- 书桌 shūzhuō — desk (for reading or writing); study desk
- 灯 dēng — lamp; light; lantern
- 镜子 jìngzi — mirror (a reflecting surface)
- 电视 diànshì — television; TV
- 冰箱 bīngxiāng — refrigerator; fridge
- 洗衣机 xǐyījī — washing machine; washer
- 微波炉 wēibōlú — microwave oven
- 炉子 lúzi — stove; oven; furnace (appliance for cooking or heating)
- 水槽 shuǐcáo — kitchen or utility sink; basin for washing
- 水龙头 shuǐlóngtóu — faucet; tap (device that controls flow of water)
- 空调 kōngtiáo — air conditioning; air conditioner (including units that have a heating mode)
- 暖气 nuǎnqì — central heating; heater; warm air
- 热水器 rèshuǐqì — water heater
- 抽屉 chōuti — drawer (a sliding compartment in furniture)
- 地毯 dìtǎn — carpet; rug
- 窗帘 chuānglián — window curtains; drapes
- 锁 suǒ — to lock; to lock up; (also) a lock (object)
- 钥匙 yàoshi — key (for a lock)
- 住所 zhùsuǒ — habitation; dwelling place; residence
- 公寓 gōngyù — apartment; block of flats (may be public housing or condominium) (CL: 套)
- 房东 fángdōng — landlord; owner of a rented property
- 房客 fángkè — tenant
- 装修 zhuāngxiū — to decorate; to fit up; to renovate (interior)
- 修理 xiūlǐ — to repair; to fix (something broken or malfunctioning)
- 清洁 qīngjié — clean; free from dirt or impurities
