鼓气 — gǔqì

1. to inflate; to blow air into something; to puff up; to swell up

   他给气球鼓气。 tā gěi qìqiú gǔqì — He inflated the balloon.

2. (fig.) to encourage; to cheer someone up; to boost (confidence)

   大家都在给他鼓气，希望他能通过考试。 dàjiā dōu zài gěi tā gǔqì xīwàng tā néng tōngguò kǎoshì — Everyone was encouraging him, hoping he would pass the exam.
