麻醉 — mázuì

1. anesthesia; the state produced by anesthetics

   手术前病人需要做麻醉。 shǒushù qián bìngrén xūyào zuò mázuì — The patient needs to have anesthesia before the operation.

2. to anesthetize; to give someone anesthesia

   医生把病人麻醉以后开始手术。 yīshēng bǎ bìngrén mázuì yǐhòu kāishǐ shǒushù — After the doctor anesthetized the patient, the operation began.

3. (figurative) to numb or stupefy (someone's mind); to corrupt or weaken morally

   长期的安逸生活会麻醉人的奋斗精神。 chángqī de ānyì shēnghuó huì mázuì rén de fèndòu jīngshén — A long life of comfort can numb people's fighting spirit.
