1. fig. when a person attains a position of power or influence, their relatives and friends also benefit (literally “the chickens and dogs ascend to heaven”); used of nepotism or collective advancement following one person's success

   他一入朝为官，亲戚朋友都鸡犬升天了。 tā yī rù cháo wèiguān qīnqīpéngyǒu dōu jīquǎnshēngtiān le — Once he took office, his relatives and friends all benefited.

2. lit. (in stories) if someone attains immortality or enlightenment, even his chickens and dogs ascend to heaven
