   犯错误的学生被老师戴上高帽子，在全班面前示众。 fàncuòwù de xuéshēng bèi lǎoshī dài shàng gāomàozi zài quánbān miànqián shìzhòng — The student who made a mistake was made to wear the dunce cap by the teacher and shown to the whole class.

2. (fig.) flattery; insincere praise

   那些溜须拍马的话不过是给领导戴高帽子，别当真。 nàxiē liūxūpāimǎ dehuà bùguò shì gěi lǐngdǎo dàigāomàozi biédàngzhēn — Those flattering words are just putting a dunce cap on the boss; don't take them seriously.
