   看他的颜色，事情不太妙。 kàn tā de yán sè ， shì qíng bù tài miào 。 — Judging by his expression, things aren't looking good.

2. color; hue (often in compounds, e.g. pigments, tones)

   这幅画的颜色很鲜艳。 zhè fú huà de yán sè hěn xiān yàn 。 — The colors in this painting are very bright.

3. surname Yan (a Chinese family name)

   他姓颜，是我的老师。 tā xìng yán ， shì wǒ de lǎo shī 。 — His surname is Yan; he is my teacher.
