顿 — dùn

1. to stop; to pause

   他顿了一下，继续说完了话。 tā dùn le yīxià jìxù shuōwán le huà — He paused for a moment, then finished speaking.

2. to arrange; to lay out

   他把客人顿在客房里休息。 tā bǎ kèrén dùn zài kèfáng lǐ xiūxī — He arranged for the guests to rest in the guest room.

3. to kowtow; to stamp (one's foot) — (archaic/limited use)

   他跪在父亲灵前顿首三次。 tā guì zài fùqīn língqián dùnshǒu sāncì — He knelt before his father's coffin and kowtowed three times.

4. at once; immediately

   听到消息，他顿觉轻松。 tīngdào xiāoxī tā dùnjué qīngsōng — Upon hearing the news, he immediately felt relieved.

5. classifier for meals, beatings, scoldings, bouts, spells, etc. (one time, one meal, one bout)

   我们今天吃了两顿饭。 wǒmen jīntiān chī le liǎngdùn fàn — We ate two meals today.
