顶 — dǐng

1. apex; crown of the head; top; roof

   山顶被雪覆盖了。 shāndǐng bèi xuě fùgài le — The mountain top was covered with snow.

2. most; highest (degree)

   他今天心情顶好了。 tā jīntiān xīnqíng dǐng hǎo le — He's in a great mood today. (colloquial)

3. to carry on the head; to place on top of the head

   妇女们把篮子顶在头上。 fùnǚ men bǎ lánzi dǐng zài tóushàng — The women carried baskets on their heads.

4. to push to the top; to bump (a forum thread); to raise someone's profile

   有人在论坛里不停地顶那条贴子。 yǒurén zài lùntán lǐ bùtíng dì dǐng nàtiáo tiēzi — Someone keeps bumping that post on the forum.

5. to go against; to oppose; to withstand

   这部电影顶撞了传统观念。 zhèbù diànyǐng dǐngzhuàng le chuántǒngguānniàn — This film goes against traditional ideas.

6. to replace; to substitute; to act in place of

   他明天要顶替经理出席会议。 tā míngtiān yào dǐngtì jīnglǐ chūxíhuìyì — He will substitute for the manager at the meeting tomorrow.

7. to be subjected to (an aerial bombing, hailstorm etc)

   战争期间，该村多次遭到炮火轰顶，损失惨重。 zhànzhēng qījiān gāicūn duōcì zāodào pàohuǒ hōng dǐng sǔnshīcǎnzhòng — During the war, the village was repeatedly hit from above by artillery fire and suffered heavy losses.
