鞭 — biān

1. whip; lash

   他用鞭子抽打牲畜。 tāyòng biānzi chōudǎ shēngchù — He whipped the livestock with a whip.

2. to flog; to whip (as an action)

   士兵因失职被鞭打惩罚。 shìbīng yīn shīzhí bèi biāndǎ chéngfá — The soldier was flogged as punishment for dereliction of duty.

3. conductor's baton (or similar short rod used to direct or strike)

   指挥家举起鞭子开始演出。 zhǐhuījiā jǔqǐ biānzi kāishǐ yǎnchū — The conductor raised the baton to begin the performance.

4. segmented iron weapon (historic); a kind of flail or mace

   古代战士有时会使用鞭形武器作为近战武器。 gǔdài zhànshì yǒushí huì shǐyòng biānxíng wǔqì zuòwéi jìnzhàn wǔqì — Ancient warriors sometimes used whip-like weapons as melee arms.

5. penis (of an animal), used as food

   在某些地方，牛鞭被当作一道特殊菜肴。 zài mǒuxiē dìfāng niúbiān bèi dàngzuò yīdào tèshū càiyáo — In some places, bull penis is served as a specialty dish.
