miànbì

面壁 — miànbì

1. to face the wall; to turn to face a wall

   他面壁站着，什么也不说。 tā miànbì zhàn zhe shénme yě bù shuō — He stood facing the wall, saying nothing.

2. to sit facing the wall in meditation (Buddhism); to practise wall-gazing meditation

   僧人们在禅堂里面壁参禅。 sēng rénmen zài chántáng lǐmiàn bì cānchán — The monks sat facing the wall to meditate in the meditation hall.

3. (fig.) to devote oneself to study or work; to bury oneself in study/work

   考试前他面壁苦读，准备复习。 kǎoshì qián tā miànbì kǔdú zhǔnbèi fùxí — Before the exam he buried himself in study to prepare.
