靠 — kào

1. to lean against or on; to rest against

   他靠着墙等朋友。 tā kàozhe qiáng děng péngyǒu — He leaned against the wall waiting for a friend.

2. to stand by the side of; to be located next to

   小店靠河，风景很好。 xiǎodiàn kàohé fēngjǐng hěn hǎo — The little shop is beside the river; the scenery is nice.

3. to come near to; to approach

   冬天靠近的时候，天气越来越冷。 dōngtiān kàojìn de shíhòu tiānqì yuèláiyuè lěng — As winter approaches, the weather gets colder.

4. to depend on; to rely on

   你别总靠别人，学会独立吧。 nǐ bié zǒng kào biérén xuéhuì dúlì ba — Don't always rely on others; learn to be independent.

5. to trust (someone); to count on

   这件事就靠你了，请别推辞。 zhèjiàn shì jiù kàonǐle qǐng bié tuīcí — This matter rests on you; please don't refuse.

6. (vulgar) to fuck; coarse sexual term

   别随便乱靠别人，这是粗俗的说法。 bié suíbiàn luàn kào biérén zhè shì cūsú de shuōfǎ — Don't casually say 'kào' about people — it's a crude term.

7. old: traditional military costume drama where performers wear armor

   戏台上的将军穿着华丽的靠。 xìtái shàng de jiāngjūn chuānzhe huálì de kào — The general on stage wore an ornate armor costume (kao).
