静默 — jìngmò

1. silent; still; quiet

   会议室里一片静默，大家都在等主席发言。 huìyìshì lǐ yīpiàn jìngmò dàjiā dōu zài děng zhǔxí fāyán — The meeting room fell silent; everyone was waiting for the chair to speak.

2. to mourn in silence; to observe silence

   遇难者家属在广场上静默悼念。 yùnànzhě jiāshǔ zài guǎngchǎng shàng jìngmò dàoniàn — The victims' families observed a silent mourning on the square.

3. (neologism c.2022) to stay at home during a pandemic (observe social silence/isolation)

   疫情期间，整个小区静默了一个星期。 yìqíng qījiān zhěnggè xiǎoqū jìngmò le yígè xīngqī — During the outbreak, the whole residential compound stayed in lockdown for a week.
