雪藏 — xuěcáng

1. to keep something in cold storage; to put into a cold store

   这些文件被雪藏在档案室里，平时几乎看不到。 zhèxiē wénjiàn bèi xuě cáng zài dàngànshì lǐ píngshí jīhū kànbúdào — These documents were kept in cold storage in the archives and are rarely seen.

2. (fig.) to suspend a performer or sports player as a punishment; to bench someone

   教练把他雪藏了几个赛季，原因是他屡次违反队规。 jiàoliàn bǎ tā xuě cáng le jǐgè sàijì yuányīn shì tā lǚcì wéifǎn duì guī — The coach benched him for several seasons because he repeatedly broke team rules.

3. to keep someone or something out of sight until the right moment (e.g. a key player kept in reserve)

   为了在决赛出其不意，主教练把主力前锋雪藏到最后才上场。 wèile zài juésài chūqíbùyì zhǔjiàoliàn bǎ zhǔlì qiánfēng xuě cáng dào zuìhòu cái shàngchǎng — To surprise in the final, the head coach kept the main striker in reserve until the end.
