难为 — nánwei

1. to make things difficult for someone; to embarrass; to put someone in an awkward position

   他不想难为你，就没多问。 tā bùxiǎng nánwéi nǐ jiù méi duō wèn — He didn't want to embarrass you, so he didn't ask more.

2. to press or urge someone (usually to do something); to compel someone to act

   别难为他，他只是个新手。 bié nánwéi tā tā zhǐshì gè xīnshǒu — Don't press him; he's just a beginner.

3. difficult; hard to do (colloquial: it's a tough job)

   这活儿挺难为的，需要耐心。 zhè huóer tǐng nánwéi de xūyào nàixīn — This job is rather tough; it requires patience.

4. polite formula used to thank or to apologize for troubling someone: 'sorry to trouble you' / 'thank you for your trouble'

   难为你了，刚才多谢帮忙。 nánwéi nǐ le gāngcái duōxiè bāngmáng — Sorry to trouble you — thanks for helping just now.
