陷落 — xiànluò

1. to surrender (of a fortress); to fall (to the enemy)

   这座城堡在激战后最终陷落。 zhè zuò chéngbǎo zài jīzhàn hòu zuìzhōng xiànluò — The fortress ultimately fell after fierce fighting.

2. subsidence (of land)

   由于地下水过度抽取，村庄出现了严重的陷落。 yóuyú dìxiàshuǐ guòdù chōuqǔ cūnzhuāng chūxiàn le yánzhòng de xiànluò — Because of excessive groundwater extraction, the village experienced severe subsidence.
