陷 — xiàn

1. pitfall; trap

   小心，别掉入那种生活的陷阱。 xiǎoxīn bié diàorù nàzhǒng shēnghuó de xiànjǐng — Be careful, don't fall into that kind of life trap.

2. to get stuck; to sink; to cave in

   那辆车陷在泥里出不来了。 nàliàngchē xiàn zài ní lǐ chūbùlái le — The car is stuck in the mud and can't get out.

3. to frame (set someone up with a false charge); to entrap

   他声称自己被人陷害，警方正在调查。 tā shēngchēng zìjǐ bèi rén xiànhài jǐngfāng zhèngzài diàochá — He claims he was framed; the police are investigating.

4. to capture (a city in battle); to fall (to the enemy)

   古时很多城池都曾被敌军陷落。 gǔshí hěnduō chéngchí dōu céng bèi díjūn xiànluò — In ancient times many cities were captured by enemy forces.

5. defect (flaw)

   这个零件有个陷，影响了整体性能。 zhège língjiàn yǒu gè xiàn yǐngxiǎng le zhěngtǐ xìngnéng — This part has a flaw that affects the overall performance.
