1. apart from; besides; in addition to (can exclude or include)

   除了他，谁也没来。 chúle tā shuí yě méilái — Apart from him, nobody came.

2. used in the pattern 除了 A 就是 B to present one of two habitual alternatives ('either A or B')

   他除了写作，就是教书。 tā chúle xiězuò jiùshì jiāoshū — He either writes or teaches.
