   阎王在地府掌管生死。 yánwáng zài dìfǔ zhǎngguǎn shēngsǐ — Yama rules life and death in the underworld.

2. (fig.) a cruel, tyrannical person; someone who rules by fear

   他的脾气像阎王一样，谁都怕他。 tā de píqì xiàng yánwáng yīyàng shéi dōu pà tā — His temper is like the King of Hell's; everyone is afraid of him.
