间歇 — jiànxiē

1. to stop in the middle of something; to cease temporarily

   会议中途突然间歇，大家都不知道接下来怎么办。 huìyì zhōngtú tūrán jiànxiē dàjiā dōu bùzhī dào jiēxiàlái zěnmebàn — The meeting stopped suddenly in the middle; everyone didn't know what to do next.

2. intermittent; occurring at intervals

   他有间歇性的头痛，常常几天好几天又犯一次。 tā yǒu jiànxiēxìng de tóutòng chángcháng jǐtiān hǎo jǐtiān yòu fàn yīcì — He has intermittent headaches; they often recur every few days.

3. intermittence; a pause or break in continuity

   发动机的间歇需要尽快检查，以免发生故障。 fādòngjī de jiànxiē xūyào jǐnkuài jiǎnchá yǐmiǎn fāshēng gùzhàng — The engine's intermittence needs to be checked quickly to avoid failure.
