闭关 — bìguān

1. to go into seclusion; to retreat from public life (often for meditation or study)

   他闭关修行三年。 tā bìguān xiūxíng sānnián — He secluded himself for three years of practice.

2. to close the passes; to seal off the country (to block borders or checkpoints)

   敌军闭关，不许人来人往。 díjūn bìguān bùxǔ rénláirénwǎng — The enemy sealed off the passes, not allowing people to come and go.
