长 — cháng

1. long (of length or duration)

   这条路很长，走路要半个小时。 zhètiáo lù hěn zhǎng zǒulù yào bàngè xiǎoshí — This road is very long; it takes half an hour to walk.

2. (bound form) length

   这条绳子的长短不够，需要再接一段才行。 zhètiáo shéngzi de chángduǎn bùgòu xūyào zài jiē yīduàn cái xíng — The rope is not long enough; another section needs to be added.

3. (bound form) to be good at; to be strong in (a skill)

   他长于数学，解决问题很快。 tā chángyú shùxué jiějuéwèntí hěnkuài — He is strong in mathematics and solves problems quickly.

4. (literary) surplus; spare

   仓中年年有长，足以备来年之用。 cāng zhōngnián nián yǒu zhǎng zú yǐbèi láinián zhīyòng — The warehouse has a surplus every year, enough to prepare for the coming year.

5. (bound form) forte; strong point

   他的长处是耐心和细心。 tā de chángchù shì nàixīn hé xìxīn — His strong points are patience and carefulness.

长 — zhǎng

1. to grow; to develop; to become elder

   孩子们长得很快。 háizi men zhǎng dé hěnkuài — The children are growing quickly.

2. chief; head; elder (person in charge)

   王部长主持了今天的工作会议。 wáng bùzhǎng zhǔchí le jīntiān de gōngzuò huìyì — Minister Wang presided over today's work meeting.

3. to increase; to enhance

   这次游历让他长了不少见识。 zhècì yóulì ràng tā zhǎng le bùshǎo jiànshí — This journey broadened his knowledge considerably.
