镇 — zhèn

1. to press down; to cool or chill (food or drinks)

   夏天我们用冰镇西瓜。 xiàtiān wǒmen yòng bīngzhèn xīguā — In summer we chill watermelons with ice.

2. to calm; to subdue; to suppress (emotions, unrest)

   政府出动了部队来镇压骚乱。 zhèngfǔ chūdòng le bùduì lái zhènyā sāoluàn — The government deployed troops to suppress the unrest.

3. to guard; to garrison (troops stationed to defend a place)

   这座要塞由一营士兵镇守。 zhè zuò yàosài yóu yī yíng shìbīng zhènshǒu — This fortress is garrisoned by a battalion of soldiers.

4. small town; market town

   他来自一个偏远的小镇，周末常回去看父母。 tā láizì yígè piānyuǎn de xiǎozhèn zhōumò chánghuíqù kàn fùmǔ — He comes from a remote small town and often returns on weekends to see his parents.
