锄 — chú

1. a hoe (tool)

   他拿着一把锄在田里。 tā ná zhe yībǎ chú zài tiánlǐ — He is holding a hoe in the field.

2. to hoe; to dig (soil with a hoe)

   农民在田里锄地。 nóngmín zài tiánlǐ chúdì — The farmers are hoeing the field.

3. to weed (remove unwanted plants)

   她每天锄草保持菜地干净。 tā měitiān chúcǎo bǎochí càidì gānjìng — She hoes weeds every day to keep the vegetable plot clean.

4. to get rid of; to eliminate (often used metaphorically)

   政府决定锄掉腐败分子。 zhèngfǔ juédìng chú diào fǔbàifènzǐ — The government decided to root out corrupt elements.
