1. to pave (with paving stones); to lay a road

   市政府准备下个月开始在这条街上铺路。 shìzhèngfǔ zhǔnbèi xiàgèyuè kāishǐ zài zhètiáo jiēshàng pūlù — The municipal government plans to start paving this street next month.

2. (fig.) to lay the groundwork; to prepare the way (for something)

   这次会议为两国签署合作协议铺路。 zhècì huìyì wèi liǎngguó qiānshǔ hézuò xiéyì pūlù — This meeting laid the groundwork for the two countries to sign a cooperation agreement.

3. to give a present/bribe to someone to ensure success (colloquial)

   为了让合同顺利通过，他找人铺路了。 wèile ràng hétóng shùnlì tōngguò tā zhǎo rén pūlù le — To make the contract pass smoothly, he bribed someone.
