1. old-style money shop — a traditional private bank that first appeared in the Ming dynasty, flourished in the Qing, and was phased out after 1949; (recently) an informal financial company, often operating at the edges of legality

   以前在中国，很多村镇有自己的钱庄。 yǐqián zài zhōngguó hěnduō cūnzhèn yǒu zìjǐ de qiánzhuāng — In the past in China, many villages and towns had their own qianzhuang (traditional private banks).
