酸 — suān

1. sour; tart (taste)

   这个柠檬很酸。 zhège níngméng hěn suān — This lemon is very sour.

2. sick at heart; distressed; grieved

   想起往事，他心里一阵酸。 xiǎngqǐ wǎngshì tā xīnlǐ yīzhèn suān — Recalling the past, he felt a pang of sadness.

3. sore; aching (physical pain)

   跑步后我的腿很酸。 pǎobù hòu wǒ de tuǐ hěn suān — My legs are sore after running.

4. pedantic; impractical

   他的方法太酸，不切实际。 tā de fāngfǎ tài suān bùqiēshíjì — His approach is too pedantic and impractical.

5. to make sarcastic remarks about somebody; to sneer at

   别总是酸别人，太刻薄了。 bié zǒngshì suān biérén tài kèbó le — Don't always sneer at others; it's too mean.

6. an acid (chemistry)

   盐酸是一种强酸。 yánsuān shì yīzhǒng qiángsuān — Hydrochloric acid is a strong acid.
