配戏 — pèixì

1. to play a supporting role (in a play, opera, film); to act as an understudy or accompanist for the lead

   他在这出戏里只配戏，不是主要演员。 tā zài zhè chū xì lǐ zhǐ pèixì búshì zhǔyàoyǎnyuán — He only plays a supporting role in this show; he's not a main actor.

2. to accompany (a lead) on stage, e.g. in traditional opera where a secondary actor supports the lead performer

   京剧里常常有演员为主角配戏，衬托主角的表演。 jīngjù lǐ chángcháng yǒu yǎnyuán wéi zhǔjiǎo pèixì chèntuō zhǔjué de biǎoyǎn — In Peking opera, actors often accompany the lead to highlight the lead's performance.
