1. to avoid; to keep away from (an abstract thing, action, or situation)

   为了保持健康，他尽量避油腻食物。 wèile bǎochí jiànkāng tā jǐnliàng bì yóunì shíwù — To stay healthy, he tries to avoid greasy foods.

2. to flee; to escape (physically run away from danger or pursuit)

   听到枪声，人们纷纷避入屋内。 tīngdào qiāngshēng rénmen fēnfēn bì rù wūnèi — Hearing the gunshots, people fled into the houses.

3. to hide from; to stay away from someone or something (avoid contact or exposure)

   他为躲避记者的围堵，改变了回家的路线。 tā wèi duǒbì jìzhě de wéidǔ gǎibiàn le huíjiā de lùxiàn — To hide from the reporters' blockade, he changed his route home.
