遗言 — yíyán

1. last words of a dying person; the words left by someone who has died

   在葬礼上，他的遗言被亲友们一字不落地念了出来。 zài zànglǐ shàng tā de yíyán bèi qīnyǒumen yī zì bùluò dì niàn le chūlái — At the funeral, his last words were read aloud by relatives and friends without omission.

2. wisdom or sayings left by past sages; bequeathed words of advice (often historical or proverbial)

   孔子的许多遗言至今仍指引着后人。 kǒngzi de xǔduō yíyán zhìjīn réng zhǐ yǐnzhe hòurén — Many of Confucius's bequeathed sayings still guide later generations today.
