遗书 — yíshū

1. posthumous writing; work published or produced after the author's death

   这本书是作者的遗书，出版时他已去世。 zhè běnshū shì zuòzhě de yíshū chūbǎn shí tā yǐ qùshì — This book is the author's posthumous work; he was already dead when it was published.

2. testament; last will

   他在遗书中交代了财产的分配。 tā zài yíshū zhōng jiāodài le cáichǎn de fēnpèi — He set out the distribution of his estate in his will.

3. suicide note; a farewell letter left by someone who intends to commit suicide

   警方在现场发现了一封遗书，正在调查其真实性。 jǐngfāng zài xiànchǎng fāxiàn le yīfēng yíshū zhèngzài diàochá qí zhēnshíxìng — Police found a suicide note at the scene and are investigating its authenticity.

4. ancient literature; writings from earlier times (literary/historical usage)
