道理 — dàoli

1. reason; argument (a justification offered in debate or dispute)

   他没有道理，吵不过大家。 tā méiyǒu dàolǐ chǎo bùguò dàjiā — He has no good argument and lost the argument with everyone.

2. sense; commonsense; something that makes sense (intuitive correctness)

   这句话很有道理，我完全同意。 zhè jù huà hěn yǒu dàolǐ wǒ wánquántóngyì — That statement makes a lot of sense; I totally agree.

3. principle; (a general moral or practical rule)

   做事要讲道理，不能只看利益。 zuòshì yào jiǎngdàolǐ bùnéng zhǐ kàn lìyì — You should act according to principles, not just look at profit.

4. basis; justification (grounds given to support an action or claim)

   他为迟到找了不少道理，大家都不相信。 tā wèi chídào zhǎo le bùshǎo dàolǐ dàjiā dōu bù xiāngxìn — He came up with many justifications for being late, but no one believed him.
