2. to be used by everyone; generally applicable (e.g., language, textbook)

   这本教材是通用版本，适用于全国的中学。 zhèběn jiàocái shì tōngyòng bǎnběn shìyòng yú quánguó de zhōngxué — This textbook is a universal edition, suitable for middle schools nationwide.

3. (of two or more things) interchangeable
