逆流 — nìliú

1. a current running against the main flow; adverse current; countercurrent

   河里出现了逆流，航行非常危险。 hélǐ chūxiàn le nìliú hángxíng fēicháng wēixiǎn — A countercurrent appeared in the river, making navigation very dangerous.

2. to go against the current or trend; to act contrary to the prevailing direction

   他在公司里总是敢于逆流而上，提出不同的意见。 tā zài gōngsī lǐ zǒngshì gǎnyú nìliúérshàng tíchū bùtóng de yìjiàn — He always dares to go against the tide in the company, offering different opinions.

3. fig. a reactionary tendency or counter-movement (political or social)
