退化 — tuìhuà

1. to degenerate; to deteriorate (in quality, morals, standards, etc.)

   如果不改进，制度会逐渐退化。 rúguǒ bù gǎijìn zhìdù huì zhújiàn tuìhuà — If improvements are not made, the system will gradually degenerate.

2. to atrophy (physically, e.g. muscle atrophy); to waste away

   长期不运动会导致肌肉退化。 chángqī bù yùndònghuì dǎozhì jīròu tuìhuà — Long-term lack of exercise can lead to muscle atrophy.
