退 — tuì

1. to retreat; to pull back (military or physical movement)

   敌军开始向北退。 díjūn kāishǐ xiàng běi tuì — The enemy troops began to retreat northward.

2. to withdraw (from an activity, position, agreement); to step back from participation

   因为健康问题，他不得不从比赛中退赛。 yīnwèi jiànkāng wèntí tā bùdé bù cóng bǐsài zhōng tuì sài — Because of health issues, he had to withdraw from the competition.

3. to reject; to refuse (an offer, suggestion, or request)

   公司决定退掉那份合同，因为条件太苛刻。 gōngsī juédìng tuìdiào nàfèn hétóng yīnwèi tiáojiàn tài kēkè — The company decided to reject that contract because the terms were too harsh.

4. to return (an item); to give back; to refund/ask for a refund

   这件衣服不合身，我想退了。 zhèjiàn yīfú bùhéshēn wǒ xiǎng tuì le — This piece of clothing doesn't fit; I want to return it.
