连 — lián

1. to link; to join; to connect

   这两段路需要连起来才能通车。 zhè liǎngduàn lù xūyào lián qǐlái cáinéng tōngchē — These two road sections need to be connected before traffic can pass.

2. continuously; in succession

   他连续三天没有睡觉。 tā liánxù sāntiān méiyǒu shuìjiào — He didn't sleep for three days in a row.

3. to include; including

   票价连税在内，一共是一百元。 piàojià lián shuì zàinèi yīgòng shì yìbǎiyuán — Including taxes, the fare is 100 yuan.

4. (used with 也, 都, etc.) even (to emphasize unexpectedness)

   连孩子都会做这道题，何况我们呢？ lián háizi dū huì zuò zhè dào tí hékuàng wǒmen ne — Even children can do this problem, let alone us.

5. company (military)

   连长负责带领一个连的士兵。 liánzhǎng fùzé dàilǐng yígè lián dī shìbīng — A company commander leads a company of soldiers.

6. surname Lian

   连先生是我们的新同事。 lián xiānshēng shì wǒmen de xīn tóngshì — Mr. Lian is our new colleague.
