违 — wéi

1. to disobey

   他违抗命令，受到了严厉处分。 tā wéikàngmìnglìng shòudào le yánlì chǔfèn — He disobeyed orders and received a severe punishment.

2. to violate (a rule, law, agreement)

   这种行为违反法律。 zhèzhǒng xíngwéi wéifǎn fǎlǜ — This behavior violates the law.

3. to go against; to run counter to (expectations, principles)

   他的决定违背了我的期望。 tā de juédìng wéibèi le wǒ de qīwàng — His decision went against my expectations.

4. to separate; to part (archaic/less common use)

   兄弟因误会而违离多年，直到重逢才和好。 xiōngdì yīn wùhuì ér wéi lí duōnián zhídào chóngféng cái hé hǎo — The brothers parted for years because of a misunderstanding, only reconciling when they reunited.
