还是 — háishi

1. still; as before

   他还是那个样子，没什么变化。 tā háishì nàge yàngzi méishénme biànhuà — He is still the same, nothing changed.

2. had better; it would be advisable to (soft suggestion/advice)

   你还是早点睡吧，明天还有早课。 nǐ háishì zǎodiǎn shuì ba míngtiān háiyǒu zǎokè — You'd better go to bed early; you have an early class tomorrow.

3. unexpectedly; to one's surprise

   考试很难，他还是通过了。 kǎoshì hěn nán tā háishì tōngguò le — The exam was hard, but he still passed (unexpectedly).

4. or (used in questions to offer alternatives)

   你要喝茶还是咖啡？ nǐ yào hēchá háishì kāfēi — Do you want tea or coffee?
