过筛 — guòshāi

1. to put through a sieve; to sift (flour etc); to strain (a liquid)

   把面粉过筛可以去除结块。 bǎ miànfěn guòshāi kěyǐ qùchú jiékuài — Sifting the flour removes lumps.

2. (fig.) to screen; to filter; to select (e.g. candidates, items)

   他们对申请者过筛后只留下了三个人。 tāmen duì shēnqǐngzhě guòshāi hòu zhǐ liúxià le sāngè rén — They screened the applicants and kept only three.
