1. to offer an explanation

   他向大家辩白，解释事情的来龙去脉。 tā xiàng dàjiā biànbái jiěshì shìqíng de láilóngqùmài — He offered an explanation to everyone, clarifying how the matter came about.

2. to plead innocence; to protest that one is not guilty

   他向警方辩白说自己无辜。 tā xiàng jǐngfāng biànbái shuō zìjǐ wúgū — He pleaded with the police that he was innocent.

3. to try to defend oneself (against criticism or accusation)
