辞 — cí

1. to resign (from a post)

   他昨天向公司辞职了。 tā zuótiān xiàng gōngsī cízhí le — He resigned from the company yesterday.

2. to dismiss; to give someone their dismissal

   上个月公司辞退了几位员工。 shànggèyuè gōngsī cítuì le jǐwèi yuángōng — The company dismissed several employees last month.

3. to decline (an offer, invitation)

   她礼貌地辞绝了邀请。 tā lǐmào dì cí jué le yāoqǐng — She politely declined the invitation.

4. (literary) to take leave; to bid farewell

   他向众人辞别，独自踏上了归途。 tā xiàng zhòngrén cíbié dúzì tàshàng le guītú — He bade farewell to everyone and set off alone on the journey home.

5. (archaic poetic genre) a ballad or long lyric

   屈原所作的《离骚》是楚辞的代表作。 qūyuán suǒzuò de lísāo shì chǔcí de dàibiǎozuò — Qu Yuan's Li Sao is a representative work of the Chu ci (Songs of Chu).
