较劲 — jiàojìn

1. to match strength with; to compete with someone; to lock horns

   他们俩在会议上较劲，气氛很紧张。 tāmen liǎ zài huìyì shàng jiàojìn qìfēn hěn jǐnzhāng — The two of them were competing with each other at the meeting; the atmosphere was tense.

2. to set oneself against somebody; to be deliberately uncooperative or disobliging

   别老跟我较劲，有话好好说。 bié lǎo gēn wǒ jiàojìn yǒu huà hǎohǎo shuō — Don't always pick a fight with me — if you have something to say, say it calmly.

3. to make a special effort; to try especially hard

   为了拿冠军，他每天都跟自己较劲。 wèile ná guànjūn tā měitiān dōu gēn zìjǐ jiàojìn — To win the championship, he pushes himself hard every day.
