轧 — gá

1. to crush together (in a crowd); to be pressed or squeezed

   在地铁里大家都被人群轧得很紧。 zài dìtiě lǐ dàjiā dōu bèi rénqún yà dé hěnjǐn — On the subway everyone was crushed tightly by the crowd.

2. to make friends; to strike up a relationship

   他们在大学里很快就轧上了。 tāmen zài dàxué lǐ hěnkuài jiù yàshàng le — They quickly became friends at university.

3. to check (accounts); to tally up

   会计正在把账轧一遍以备审计。 kuàijì zhèngzài bǎ zhàng yà yībiàn yǐbèi shěnjì — The accountant is checking the accounts for the audit.

轧 — zhá

1. to crush; to run over (knock someone down with a vehicle)

   那辆车不小心把狗轧死了。 nàliàngchē bùxiǎo xīn bǎ gǒu yàsǐ le — That car accidentally ran over the dog and killed it.

2. to crush; to press into a compact mass

   工人用机器把矿石轧成块。 gōngrén yòng jīqì bǎ kuàngshí yà chéngkuài — The workers used a machine to crush the ore into blocks.
