踌躇 — chóuchú

1. to hesitate

   他在门口踌躇，不知道要不要进去。 tā zài ménkǒu chóuchú bùzhī dào yào bùyào jìnqù — He hesitated at the door, not sure whether to go in.

2. (literary) to pace back and forth

   老人在院子里踌躇，等待儿子的归来。 lǎorén zài yuànzi lǐ chóuchú děngdài érzi de guīlái — The old man paced back and forth in the yard, waiting for his son's return.

3. (literary) self-satisfied; complacent

   他完成任务后显得有些踌躇，自鸣得意地笑了。 tā wánchéng rènwù hòu xiǎnde yǒuxiē chóuchú zìmíngdéyì dì xiào le — After finishing the task he looked somewhat self-satisfied and smiled complacently.
