跟 — gēn

1. heel (of the foot or a shoe)

   这双鞋的后跟有点高。 zhèshuāng xié de hòu gēn yǒudiǎn gāo — The heel of these shoes is a bit high.

2. to follow closely; to tail

   警察跟着那辆可疑的车。 jǐngchá gēnzhe nà liàng kěyí de chē — The police followed that suspicious car.

3. to go with; to accompany

   我可以跟你去超市。 wǒ kěyǐ gēn nǐ qù chāoshì — I can go to the supermarket with you.

4. (of a woman) to marry (someone)

   她跟了隔壁王先生。 tā gēn le gébì wángxiānshēng — She married Mr. Wang next door.

5. with; compared with

   这件衣服跟那件不同。 zhèjiàn yīfú gēn nàjiàn bùtóng — This piece of clothing is different from that one.

6. to; towards (indicating direction or object of an action)

   他跟我说了这件事的经过。 tā gēn wǒ shuō le zhèjiàn shì de jīngguò — He told me what happened in this matter.

7. and (joining two nouns)

   他跟我都是学生。 tā gēn wǒ dōu shì xuéshēng — He and I are both students.
