跑 — pǎo

1. to run; to move quickly on foot

   他每天早上跑五公里。 tā měitiān zǎoshàng pǎo wǔgōnglǐ — He runs five kilometers every morning.

2. to run away; to escape

   小偷见人多就跑了。 xiǎotōu jiàn rén duō jiù pǎo le — The thief ran away when he saw many people.

3. to run around (on errands etc.); to run (tasks)

   我上午都在外面跑，没时间吃饭。 wǒ shàngwǔ dōu zài wàimiàn pǎo méi shíjiān chīfàn — I was out running around all morning and had no time to eat.

4. to leak; to evaporate (of a gas or liquid)

   油管破了，汽油在跑。 yóuguǎn pò le qìyóu zài pǎo — The oil pipe broke and gasoline is leaking.

5. (verb complement) away; off (indicating motion away from a point)

   孩子一看到门就跑掉了。 háizi yī kàndào mén jiù pǎodiào le — As soon as the child saw the door he ran off.

跑 — páo

1. to paw (the ground) (of an animal)

   那匹马不停地用蹄子跑地，扬起阵阵尘土。 nà pǐ mǎ bùtíng dì yòng tízi pǎo dì yángqǐ zhènzhèn chéntǔ — The horse kept pawing at the ground nonstop, kicking up clouds of dust.
