起 — qǐ

1. to rise; to get up

   他每天六点起床。 tā měitiān liùdiǎn qǐchuáng — He gets up at six every day.

2. to raise (something); to lift up

   他用力把箱子起到肩上。 tā yònglì bǎ xiāngzi qǐdào jiānshàng — He lifted the box onto his shoulder with effort.

3. to set out; to depart; to start (a journey)

   我们明天一早起程去旅行。 wǒmen míngtiān yīzǎo qǐchéng qù lǚxíng — We will set out early tomorrow for the trip.

4. to start; to launch; to initiate an action or project; to establish

   村民们一起起了一个合作社。 cūnmín men yìqǐ qǐ le yígè hézuòshè — The villagers together established a cooperative.

5. to get/collect (from a depot, counter etc.)

   请明天到柜台来起包裹。 qǐng míngtiān dào guìtái lái qǐ bāoguǒ — Please come to the counter tomorrow to collect the parcel.

6. verb suffix meaning 'to start' (used after a verb)

   听到掌声，他高兴地站了起来。 tīngdào zhǎngshēng tā gāoxìng dì zhàn le qǐlái — Hearing the applause, he happily stood up.

7. starting from (a time, place, price etc.)

   这家餐厅的套餐五十元起。 zhèjiā cāntīng de tàocān wǔshíyuán qǐ — The set menus at this restaurant start at fifty yuan.

8. classifier for occurrences or unpredictable events: case, instance

   他这起事故没有受伤的人。 tā zhè qǐ shìgù méiyǒu shòushāng de rén — There were no injuries in this accident.

9. classifier for groups: batch, group

   这批货分三起运往各地仓库。 zhè pīhuò fēn sānqǐ yùnwǎng gèdì cāngkù — This shipment was sent in three batches to warehouses across the country.
