赶上 — gǎnshàng

1. to keep up with; to catch up with; to overtake

   他跑得很快，最后还是赶上了前面的选手。 tā pǎo dé hěnkuài zuìhòu háishì gǎnshàng le qiánmiàn de xuǎnshǒu — He ran very fast and finally caught up with the runner in front.

2. to chance upon; to happen to meet or encounter

   我在市场上赶上了一个老同学，聊了很久。 wǒ zài shìchǎng shàng gǎnshàng le yígè lǎotóngxué liáo le hěnjiǔ — I ran into an old classmate at the market and talked for a long time.

3. to be in time for; to manage to arrive before a deadline or event

   我赶上了最后一班地铁，没迟到上班。 wǒ gǎnshàng le zuìhòu yībān dìtiě méi chídào shàngbān — I caught the last subway and wasn't late for work.
