赶 — gǎn

1. to overtake; to catch up with

   他跑得很快，很快就赶上了前面的那个人。 tā pǎo dé hěnkuài hěnkuài jiù gǎnshàng le qiánmiàn de nàge rén — He ran fast and soon caught up with the person in front.

2. to hurry; to rush; (also) to try to catch (the bus, train etc)

   我得赶路了，别再耽搁了——我要赶公交。 wǒ dé gǎnlù le bié zài dāngē le wǒ yào gǎn gōngjiāo — I have to hurry on my way, don't delay — I'm trying to catch the bus.

3. to drive (cattle etc) forward; to drive (someone) away

   牧民在草地上赶牛到新的牧场。 mùmín zài cǎodìshàng gǎnniú dào xīn de mùchǎng — The herders drove the cattle to the new pasture.

4. to drive (someone) away; to expel

   店主把讨钱不肯走的人赶走了。 diànzhǔ bǎ tǎoqián bùkěn zǒu de rén gǎnzǒu le — The shop owner drove away the person who refused to leave while begging.

5. to avail oneself of (an opportunity); to make use of

   他赶上了今天的优惠活动。 tā gǎnshàng le jīntiān de yōuhuìhuódòng — He took advantage of today's promotional event.

6. until; by (a certain time)

   请在下周五前赶完这份报告。 qǐng zài xià zhōuwǔ qián gǎn wán zhèfèn bàogào — Please rush to finish this report by next Friday.
