走板 — zǒubǎn

1. to be off the beat; to sing or play out of rhythm; (colloq.) to sound awful (of singing)

   合唱时他突然走板，大家都愣住了。 héchàng shí tā tūrán zǒubǎn dàjiā dōu lèngzhù le — During the choir, he suddenly went off the beat and everyone was stunned.

2. (fig.) to wander off the topic; to deviate from the subject

   开会的时候别走板，先把计划讲完再讨论别的。 kāihuì de shíhòu bié zǒubǎn xiān bǎ jìhuà jiǎngwán zài tǎolùn biéde — Don't wander off the topic during the meeting; finish presenting the plan before discussing other things.

3. (diving) to step toward the end of the board; to approach the end of the diving board

   教练提醒他不要走板，要控制好起跳位置。 jiàoliàn tíxǐng tā búyào zǒubǎn yào kòngzhì hǎo qǐtiào wèizhì — The coach reminded him not to step toward the end of the board and to control his takeoff position.
